Were the Founding Fathers Virtuous?

Podcast with Professors: Jeffrey Rosen of the National Constitution Center

Dear Classical Wisdom Reader,

A Challenge this fourth of July, not only to our American readers, but to all that value life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness: This independence day, add to your various BBQing and fireworking schedule, a deep dive into the very founding of America.

Embedded in the minds and documents of those early days were ancient lessons… ideas from the Classical World that forged a whole new society.

But how exactly did the Classics inspire the founding fathers? What were the most important virtues as outlined by those original men? And were they truly virtuous themselves?

This month’s Podcast with Professors is with Jeffrey Rosen, an American legal scholar who serves as the president and CEO of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. He has written frequently about the U.S. Supreme Court and is author of several books, including his most recent: The Pursuit of Happiness: How Classical Writers on Virtue Inspired the Lives of the Founders and Defined America.

We discuss the extremely important phrase, “The Pursuit of Happiness”... and where it comes from; how we can cultivate more virtue ourselves; and which ancient texts taught those men the most…

Classical Wisdom Members, please enjoy this month’s timely podcast to think about America and its pursuit of virtue this fourth of July.

Also, what do you think about taking on that fantastic reading challenge Jeffrey mentions? Anyone else in? Like and comment below to let me know.

All the best,
