Outstanding recommendation. Professor Campbell’s Pathways Podcast (a collection of his lectures, with commentary) is, in my opinion, indispensable listening on this very subject. His episodes on Joyce and Mann’s work are particularly insightful. Thanks, Ed!
I love the work of Joseph Campbell in this arena. He taught us so much about storytelling, mythology and art, their interactions with both wider collective consciousness and narrower individuals psychology. His warnings and laments regarding the lack of unifying mythologies for our multicultural Western world and ever shrinking global society are, in my opinion, more appropriate and dire than ever. We have crises of despair and nihilism and need to find ways to repair this lost vital function for so many in our world.
Sounds like a great lineup! I am excited to hear what they have to say.
Personally, I have been thinking a lot about the power of story in the context of religion. While I do think that we should try to answer what question we can with science, there seems to be something to the human experience that science can not answer for. It seems to me that stories provide the context or framework for how we can structure and implement scientific facts into our lives, or something like that. Very interesting stuff. Thank you for your post and take care!
Looking forward to a vibrant discussion!
