The secular terms should be used in a future modern world. The way history is recorded shouldn't be stained with religious or ideological influences -- and, most importantly, it should reflect the times...
One can argue on this point that secularism is also just an ideology, but it fits our times better...
See the following explanation:
Something like christianism, or christianity, was OK for the medieval period because it itself can actually be described as medieval superstition...and therefore it was OK to use BC and AD during those times.
However, if one lives in a country where many are christian than one realise that the world has moved far beyond them, the christians.
They just have too many problems with science, philosophy and other such disciplines, although their bible can also be described as 'PLATONISM with some overtones of other so-called pagan philosophies such as STOICISM, like the WORD or LOGOS concept of John 1) and quite a few others...and then they don't want to see themselves as a part of so-called Paganism.
And, Jesus wasn't born in the year zero. That is if there is some truth to his myth in the Nicene Creed...
Do we actually know if he actually existed?
Christian creeds like the ARIAN CREED were outlawed in 381 CE by the then Roman Emperor together with every form of Paganism...
The Nicene Creed was the only christianity that survived.
So, what do we really know about Jesus? The real one (if there was one) is dead and buried somewhere in the Middle-East and there's is probably none who knows his 'real' story...
Therefore the BC and AD way of dating is based on a myth and not even on history; and, the year zero is just an assumption, as well...
Even christians teach that he was born before that...
Therefore, the above mentioned ways of dating should be revised...
The secular terms are the best at this moment in time...
I use BC and AD. I am a Christian, though it was also the tradition I was brought up with (never saw the BCE/CE terms until I was much older).
But the thing that frustrates me is when people put AD after rather than before the year ;)
