Dear Classical Wisdom Litterae Reader,
These days, war is just around the corner. But then again, hasn't it always been that way? Didn't the Ancients live in a constant state of warfare?
In over 5000+ years, we humans still go around killing each other... has nothing changed? Well, plenty no doubt. Technology, for instance, has evolved enormously, from the weapons we use to the transport we bring them on. We also attack people who live really, really far away... rather than our neighbor. (Though Alexander the Great would prove that point wrong!)
But, perhaps the biggest change between now and the ancient world is the men and women who go to battle. This is because back in the classical era, fighters belonged to a special class or caste; they were warriors.
And with being a warrior, there was a specific code of conduct, one that elevated them above a mere hoplite, soldier or even officer.
But what exactly is it that made them a warrior? (hint: it doesn't include pushing a button).
With this goal in mind, this month's Classical Wisdom Litterae covers the warrior realm of the Ancient Greece and Rome (and Scythia), in order to try to discover what it really meant to be a warrior, including:
The Fearless Amazon Female Warriors,
The Glory and Honor of the hero,
Top ten real life warriors from the ancient world,
How Spartans became the greatest warriors,
The Spartan code of conduct,
And, Ajax, a true hero... or not?
This Classical Wisdom Litterae edition ties in perfectly with a number of our ebooks, in particular, our “Epic Collection”, which you can download in the Members section or the newly released segment below.
Also included is a fantastic lecture on the history, value and literature of Rome’s dead language with Serbian philologist, Visnja Bojovic.
Now, onto Ancient Warriors….
