Weekend Roundup

classicalwisdom.substack.com

Dear Classical Wisdom Reader,

Who was the greatest storyteller?

This week at Classical Wisdom, we’re thinking about stories and storytelling. Many stories that have roots far more ancient than you would probably imagine: the stories of law enforcement, of rebels, and of….Frogs?

Yes, Aristophanes’ comedy The Frogs, despite what the title may suggest, is actually preoccupied with the question of who was the greatest of the Greek playwrights: Aeschylus or Euripides?

It’s a tough one! I think I’d personally give Euripides the edge, but then again, they are such different storytellers…

If you’re interested in storytelling yourself, you’ll want to check out our upcoming event in partnership with Civic Renaissance and Wondrium, ‘The Power of Storytelling’ on March 4th. A unique inter-disciplinary summit featuring some of the world’s greatest storytellers, including authors, actresses, photographers and professors, all sharing their perspectives on the power of storytelling.

Plus, for our members, we have an exclusive extract about the rebel queen, Zenobia, taken from Stephen Dando-Collins’ new book Rebels Against Rome: 400 Years of Rebellions Against the Rule of Rome.

From Aristophanes to Zenobia… It really is an A - Z this week!

Such a tough call - I wish we had their complete works to make a more fair judgement. Both are top classical contenders to the GOAT playwright, rivaling Shakespeare and Chekhov, imho. Cheers
