The Ancient World is Not Dead
The Great Conversation is very much alive! Join in the discussion, today...
Dear Classical Wisdom Reader,
I’m not sure if it’s happened to you before, but I promise it’s happened to me way too many times… I start to talk about the classics, make some reference to the ancient world, and I’m met with a vacant stare.
Sometimes my fellow conversationalists are nonplussed…sometimes they just don’t care…occasionally, there’s even a whiff of contempt, as though the ancient world represented something better left “dead and buried.”
Either way, it’s a tragic reminder that most people today know little of the ancient world itself… about the vast treasury of ideas, stories, and philosophies that shaped our civilization.
Instead, they hurry through life, caught in the noise and pressure of the present, unaware that an immense resource lies waiting to guide them: the Classics.
But the truth is the ancient world is NOT dead… far from it, in fact.
It is so alive… in our language, our art, our politics, and our search for meaning.
History gives us perspective, showing the rise and fall of empires and the cycles of human ambition. It shows us context, motivation and the nature of mankind.
Myth reveals who we are…our fears, desires, and dreams made visible. It provides inspiration and symbols for artists, authors and thinkers.
And philosophy invites us into the Great Conversation, asking the questions that matter most: How should we live? And how can we live a meaningful life?
At its heart lies the ancient concept of eudaimonia. This is not mere happiness or fleeting pleasures, but deep fulfillment, the art of living well.
For centuries, the Classics have helped kings, scholars, and ordinary people alike find their flourishing…and they can do the same for you.
But that journey doesn’t have to happen alone. It can begin with a community of curious minds, learning and growing together.
