In the Netherlands (Holland if you prefer this), St. Nicholas' (Santa Claus) birthday isn't celebrated during Xmas, but on December the fifth. It is a widely accepted/celebrated Dutch children folklore festivity, parents giving their children presents, which are thrown down through the chimney at night on December the fifth, while he is riding on his white horse on the roof of houses, and children believing, sitting at the fire place, this really happens. He is accompanied by negro servants, which causes as lot of fuss recently because of the connection with slavery. His Dutch name is Sinterklaas (yes, your recognize St. Nicholas) and many folklore scientists think the American Santa Claus personage originates from the Dutch Sinterklaas personage, when New York was a Dutch settlement called New Amsterdam. The Harlem district got his name from the Dutch city Haarlem and Brooklyn from the Dutch city Breukelen, and I could name a lot of other examples of Dutch history in the USA (what about president Roosevelt, a Dutch name, and president van Buuren, also a Dutch name, he spoke Dutch at home)? When children get older, they are very disappointed discovering Sinterklaas is only a fairy tale person... I remember this disappointment...
"Sailors, pawnbrokers, and children" that is tough job in life, in death tuned into scare tactic to keep kids in line. Really patron to the stockholders and Capital markets thanks to the poets' "Jolly old St.Nick."
That was all absolutely fascinating. Thank you 🙏
I visited his Basilica in Bari, Italy in 2018. It was a wonderful experience.
Was the butcher named Krampus?
