Dear Classical Wisdom Reader,
Your editor is human… all too human.
Yesterday’s notification of our upcoming event “On the Nature of the Gods” contained an error. I put the wrong date. It should have been September 14th, rather than the 4th. Oops!
On the plus side, you can be very reassured that nothing here at Classical Wisdom is AI generated. Just good old fashioned flesh and bones typing away on the kitchen table fueled by caffeine and the love of Classics.
But while I have you, I just want to get all our events straight… because we actually have THREE really different and interesting webinars for the next three months that are REALLY exciting. I know, I’m a nerd, but honestly I can’t wait and the first one is next week!
So get your calendars out, mark the dates, and register to save your space (and get the recordings):
First up: Thursday, August 31st @ Noon EST
How to Save Democracy: The Importance of the Civic Bargain
Professors Brook Manville and Josiah Ober offer a guide to democratic renewal in order to guarantee civic rights of freedom, equality, and dignity. By comparing what worked and what failed in four key moments in democracy’s history... can we learn how modern democracies can survive and thrive today?
Next: Thursday, September 14th @ Noon EST
On the Nature of the Gods: Cicero and the Philosophical Approaches to God
Roman statesman and philosopher Cicero wrote a philosophical dialogue trying to understand the gods, their nature, how they interact with the world of human beings... and indeed, if they care about humans at all! Through the ancient philosophical approaches of Epicureanism, Stoicism and Skepticism, famed translator George J. Thomas and Professor of Classics at Cornell University, Michael Fontaine, will discuss the Nature of Gods and how ancient philosophy can help us understand the divine.
Finally: Wednesday, October 11th, 2023 @ Noon EST
The Story of Thebes
Featuring the greatest minds, authors and academics to delve into the amazing history, mythology and archeology of Thebes, this seminal summit on the Story of Thebes will explore the ancient city-state like never before. Including: Paul Cartledge, James Romm, Stephen Dando-Collins and Stephanie Larson to name just a few of our panelists…
Registration will be open soon!
I hope you can join us for all these exciting events. From politics and religion to mythology and history, we have you completely covered in the Classics!
And if you have any questions about this event, or anything else, feel free to message me or reply to this email.
All the best,
