If I remember correctly, when our history teacher (grade VIII) taught us about the conquests of Alexander the Great, my distinct impression was that Alexander wanted to build a world, where all cultures (the ones he captured, for sure), came together in a spirit of friendship and togetherness. Of course! at that time, the only way to bring countries together was through military conquests. He foresaw this goal and set afloat means to make it possible. Unfortunately, he died young, and did not leave any secret messages or instructions behind.

The fact that Alexander ordered the start of the library at Alexandria, where every book in the world would be available, attests to his intentions. These orders for the library were given and funds provided for before he took off on his campaigns.

In my mind, a poet has a specific task (to compose poetry). So I would call Alexander a humanitarian. Now, to be a humanitarian in thinking, but a killer in practice, is an oxymoron. You be the judge as to where the boundaries are!
